Equipped to Lead - SLHRD's Roman Mitchell ready for the future
3/16/18
Baton Rouge, LA - For Nashville native and PhD candidate in LSU’s School of Leadership & Human Resource Development, Roman Mitchell, a scholarship provided the opportunity to attend the National Charter School Conference in his hometown where he participated in sessions concerning governance, non-profit management, facility development, and facility financing.
"Attending the conference and engaging a collective of educators, administrators,
community partners and corporate sponsors was life changing."
“No doubt about it, attending the conference and engaging a collective of educators, administrators, community partners and corporate sponsors was life changing,” Mitchell said. “Once completing my degree I plan on pursuing opportunities to serve as a human resourse director with a focus on training and employment development.”
Mitchell, an active member of the Black Graduate and Professional Student Association (BGPSA) and the Vice President of Grad Students Run, hopes to be employed as an organizational development specialist, a chief learning officer or a training and development director. The goal of each of these fields is to develop leadership, deploy planning, problem solving and to change management capabilities to the required techniques of a successful globalized organization.
“During the conference I spent time with the Chief Operating Officer and National Executive Director of Friendship Education Foundation Joe Harris. The experience was great and I’m even more excited post-conference knowing that a professional the caliber of Mr. Harris is now a mentor and trusted advisor.”
During his LSU career, Mitchell has become more globally engaged and culturally competent. He now looks at international trends and global markets. Thanks to taking Cultural Competency and Diversity course with Dr. Jenny Daugherty, he has been given insight into how his actions can be tailored to different cultures.
Along with his love for tailgating and anything related to enjoying LSU’s campus atmosphere, Mitchell expressed his unexpected realization about the large research institution.
“I was surprised everyone is so generous and the professors really take the time to engage students,” Mitchell said. “For that, I am very thankful. These experiences can really make a large research university not feel so overwhelming.”
