The School of Leadership and Human Resource Development Assistant Professor, Dr. Petra A. Robinson, presented her research findings at the Conference on Academic Research in Education in Las Vegas, Nevada in February. Sponsored by the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) College of Education, the second annual CARE conference brought scholars from across the US and abroad to present scholarship related to a variety of contexts, including theory, practice, empirical research, and conceptual advancement.Dr. Robinson's primary research focus centers on issues related to colorism and she featured her work through an interactive presentation highlighting the findings of a qualitative study encompassing a series of focus groups and content analysis of the Langston Hughes poem, Harlem Sweeties. Framed through a critical lens, Dr. Robinson's presentation sought to offer thoughtful critique about the perceptions of skin color and beauty as presented in the poem in sharp contrast to contemporary contexts. The School of Leadership and Human Resource Development is proud to highlight Dr. Robinson's diverse scholarship which seeks to address ways to tackle institutional systems that contribute to marginalization of women of color, especially related to their skin tone.
