Sulentic Dowell Appointed to Louisiana Literacy Advisory Commission

BATON ROUGE, LA - Margaret-Mary Sulentic Dowell, PhD, Cecil “Pete” Taylor Endowed Professor of Literacy Leadership and Urban Education
and Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education faculty member, was recently named a
member of the Louisiana Department of Education’s Literacy Advisory Commission.
Sulentic Dowell is one of the 14 members of the commission whose charge is to adhere
to legislative mandates regarding literacy, specifically to serve as an advisory board
to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) and the Louisiana Department
of Education (LDOE). Part of the Literacy Advisory Commission’s work is to research
and analyze policies, formulate policy and programming recommendations, and to ultimately
report findings and recommendations by February 6, 2024. Sulentic Dowell shared, “Literacy
learning and teaching is important work. Serving on this commission with colleagues
from across the state is an honor and affirmation of my continuing research in the
literacy area.”
