BATON ROUGE -- The LSU School of Kinesiology is proud to announce two students from the Kinesiology program have been named LSU Discover Day 2020 winners. Abigail Caffey and Stephen Lopez, both 2020 graduates of the School of Kinesiology, received awards based on their research presentations.

Abigail Caffey completed her undergraduate research under Marc Dalecki, PhD, in his Motor Behavior and Cognition lab within the School of Kinesiology. For her presentation about cognitive deficits in college students with a concussion history from youth, Abigail won second place in the monetary prize category for the College of Human Sciences and Education and third place in the Top Three Poster Presenters for LSU Discover Day 2020. She has also been named to the Tiger 12 and received an LSU Distinguished Undergraduate Researcher medal. Abigail will continue her research in Dr. Dalecki’s lab at LSU as a Master’s student in kinesiology, concentrating on motor behavior studies.

Stephen Lopez, also a graduating senior, was awarded third place in the monetary prize category for the College of Human Sciences and Education. Mentored by LSU biology professor Alyssa Johnson, PhD, Stephen’s research centers on how a human short sleep mutation offsets the negative effects of sleep deprivation, as well as offers novel methods of combating neurodegenerative disease. After graduation, Stephen plans on pursuing an M.S. in Biological Sciences from LSU and then an M.D. from the LSU School of Medicine.

LSU Discover Day is the annual culmination of the LSU Discover Undergraduate Research program. More than 100 students presented virtually in this year’s LSU Discover Day, with 80 dedicated faculty and staff judges, as well as 5 moderators to ensure the success of the event. This program supports student participation in faculty-mentored research and professional-level activities.
