Faculty Spotlight: Michael Rutledge
The January Faculty Spotlight features new School of Kinesiology professor, Dr. Michael Rutledge.
When did you start teaching at LSU and what will you be teaching this semester?
I was originally hired as an adjunct during the Fall 2019 semester, however, I accepted
a full time joint appointment with the School of Education and the School of Kinesiology
in January 2021. For the School of Kinesiology, I will teach KIN 2530 (Sport in Society)
and KIN 2513 (Professional Development in Sports Administration).
Could you list some accolades or achievements you're most proud of?
I have published research that focuses on the academic development of student athletes,
self-determination, and organizational structures within NCAA athletic departments.
I have also presented research findings regarding student athlete motivation, academic
behaviors, and college adjustment challenges at international, national, and local
conferences. In addition, I have also created and coordinated student athlete development
workshops tailored for positive post-sport trajectory.
What is your favorite class to teach or your favorite thing about being a professor?
My favorite course to teach is KIN 2530 (Sport in Society). In addition, my favorite
aspect of being a professor is witnessing growth in the academic and personal lives
of students.
What do you like best about the LSU School of Kinesiology?
LSU's School of Kinesiology is very diverse and strives to offer support for students
and faculty.
What advice would you have for current students?
I would advise students to develop a strong sense of work ethic and consistency. Once
these are developed, success will be achieved.
Anything else you'd like to include?
