BATON ROUGE—LSU Manship School doctoral students H. Dat Tran (pictured right) and Uyen Diep (pictured left) were recently awarded grants of $500 each to support independent research projects as recipients of the Patricia Kay Benoit Award.
Second-year doctoral student Tran, advised by Associate Professor Yongick Jeong, received the award for his project, titled “ ’I Know That I Know Nothing’: Examining the Relationship Between Media Consumers’ News Literacy and News Skepticism in a Government-Owned Media System.”
His research explores the relationship between knowledge of the news and news skepticism among media consumers in Vietnam, a country with a media system owned by its government.
First-year doctoral student Diep, advised by Associate Professor Ray Pingree, earned the Benoit Award for her project, titled “ ’I Am (Not) Myself’: Self-Esteem, Motivations, and Self-Representation Across Social Media Platforms.”
Her project looks at the ways people choose to present themselves on social networking platforms such as Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn, as well as whether these choices affect an individual’s social media use and exposure, self-esteem and motivations.
The Patricia Kay Benoit Award supports both master’s and doctoral students seeking to conduct independent or collaborative research on key questions related to strategic communication, journalism, social and digital media, or media and public affairs.
