- Equality in the Digital World: LSU Faculty Develop Software to Combat DiscriminationOver the past few years, Sharing Economy (SE) services such as Uber, Airbnb, and TaskRabbit have become a main facilitator of economic growth and shared prosperity in modern-day societies.Though this form of direct business exchange has been linked to significant levels of economic growth, especially in communities at the lower end of the economic ladder, recent research has exposed a serious discrimination problem affecting these platforms called digital discrimination. LSU Computer Science and Engineering Associate Professor Nash Mahmoud and LSU School of Social Work Associate Professor Michelle Livermore propose a first-of-its-kind conceptual framework for modeling and countering discrimination in the SE market.

- A Long Time Coming—LSU Alumna Shines New Light on Incarceration and 20-Year-Old LSU Social Work CaseLouisiana State University (LSU) alumna Monique Morrison has optioned both the book rights and the story rights related to a death penalty mitigation case researched by LSU Professor of Research and Director Emerita of the LSU Social Research and Evaluation Center Cecile Guin in the late ’90s. Morrison now has plans for a TV series called The Farm to be centered around Angola Prison, the former slave plantation turned Louisiana State Penitentiary, where Feltus Taylor spent the last nine years of his life before his execution by lethal injection.
- LSU School of Social Work Awarded $2.5 Million to Expand Mental Health Services in Louisiana SchoolsLSU School of Social Work (SSW) has been awarded a 5-year, $2.5 million grant from the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) to expand and strengthen the state’s school-based mental health workforce. The Louisiana School Social Work Expansion Project (LaSSWx), a partnership between LSU SSW and LDOE, will provide enhanced mental health services to students in high-need K-12 schools, help build the school-based mental health workforce to provide students with multi-tiered systems of support, and improve school culture and climate to better prepare students for employment, responsible citizenship, and fulfilling lives.
