Baton Rouge - Dorothy Kemp, a PhD candidate in the School of Leadership and Human Resource Development was one of two recipients of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Baton Rouge Branch’s Eleanor Earle Memorial Scholarship.
The AAUW Baton Rouge Louisiana branch is part of the national organization of AAUW, which advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. Founded in 1881 by seventeen alumnae of eight colleges, AAUW is the largest and oldest national organization dedicated to the advancement of women and education. For more than 128 years, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic and political.
The Eleanor Earle Memorial Scholarship, which is a $500 scholarship, is awarded to two female students each year. Eligible candidates must be doctoral students of Louisiana State University or Southern University and who have completed at least half of the prescribed program for their degree.
Scholarship recipients were able to attend a luncheon on Thursday, April 26, 2018 where Kemp gave a brief overview of her research regarding how black females navigate the cognitive dissonance caused by altering self-presentation in the job interview process; forms of altering self-presentation include resume whitening, voice altering, and appearance altering.
Kemp currently serves as the Director of Educational Support Services and Learning Specialist at CCACSA. A two time LSU graduate, she received her MBA in 2009. Her research interests include training and evaluation in learning centers, student self-regulatory behavior, and the intersectionality of race, gender, and class in the workplace.
Kemp also is the Co-Founder and Co-Chair for the College Reading and Learning Association’s (CRLA) Student-Athlete Special Interest Group, which works to include student-athlete academic support service professionals in the broader conversations within the field of student academic support services. She is also a member of the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals and has served on various sub-committees within the Learning Concerns and Enhancements Committee. Kemp is involved in various initiatives on campus as well, including the Black Faculty and Staff Caucus, Student Advocacy Advisors, Office of Multicultural Affairs Genesis Mentors, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service Committee.
Guided by her passion for community service, Kemp devotes time to various community civic and philanthropic organizations. She is a member of the Baton Rouge (Downtown) Kiwanis Club; Club Blue, Young Professional’s Affinity Group for Boys and Girls Club; 100 Black Women of Greater Baton Rouge; and is active with several animal rescue organizations.
