BATON ROUGE, LA – LSU Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Ramachandran Vaidyanathan was recently awarded Life Member designation by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It’s his second honor from the organization in three years, as he was previously named in the first class of IEEE’s Computer Society Distinguished Contributors.

“I was quite surprised to hear about [this honor], and I am happy for the recognition,” Vaidyanathan said. “In a way, the recognition is about sustained work.”

Indeed, IEEE Life Membership is “an official recognition of a strong and sustained commitment to IEEE” and is bestowed upon an active member who has attained the age of 65 years and has been a member of IEEE for a period in which the sum of their age and their years of membership equals or exceeds 100 years.

Vaidyanathan is the Elaine T. and Donald Cecil Delaune Distinguished Professor at LSU, and his research areas center around distributed algorithms, particularly in the coordination of autonomous robot swarms. He also works on incorporating parallel and distributed computing concepts in undergraduate education.

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. Its core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.
