LSU School of Social Work PhD student Kennesha Smith selected for CSWE Policy Fellowship Program

LSU School of Social Work doctoral student Kennesha Smith has been selected for the 2023-2024 Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Doctoral Student Policy Fellowship Program. This program offers participants the opportunity to connect social work research with policymaking in Washington, DC through virtual placement and mentorship with a congressional office or a government relation firm.

During this Fellowship, Smith will translate her research on K-12 students experiencing homelessness into policy proposals or briefs, advocacy materials, and other communications. She will further her research on how different states implement the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. She will use her research to advance the process of refining practices based on this policy with the goal of better service to students and families experiencing homelessness.

The Fellowship Program will run from July 2023 through June 2024 and is offered by CSWE, the national organization which accredits schools of social work across the country and represents the field of social work education.
