LSU SRP Shines at SOT
Every year, the Society of Toxicology (SOT) holds its Annual Meeting and ToxExpo to allow researchers from all over the world to come together and share their latest findings in the field of toxicology. This year's meeting was held in San Diego, California from March 27 - 31. Researchers from the Louisiana State University Superfund Program (LSU SRP) gave outstanding presentations, participated in important discussions, and won several awards. Here are just a few highlights.
LSU SRP Trainee Dr. Avinash Kumar Honored for his Research
Dr. Avinash Kumar, a LSU SRP postdoctoral trainee with Project 1 (Cormier Lab), received second place for the Dr. Dharm Singh Postdoctoral Fellow Best Abstract Award from the Association of Scientists of Indian Origin Special Interest Group. The award was for his abstract entitled Environmentally Persistent Free Radical Exposure Exacerbates Influenza Infection in Neonatal Mice by Inhibiting IL22 Production, presented at the Society of Toxicology 2022 annual meeting on March 28. He also received the Inhalation and Respiratory Specialty Section best paper of the year award.

LSU SRP Faculty and Trainees Give Presentations and Chair Sessions
On Tuesday March 29, Dr. Dugas gave a Tiny Tox Talk on Life in Academia. The next day, Ankit Aryal, a pre-doctoral trainee with Project 2 (Dugas Lab), gave a poster presentation. The title of his poster was Inhalation of Combustion-Derived Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals Causes Vascular Endothelial Injury Mediate via AhR Activation in Alveolar Type-2 Pneumocytes.

Alexandra Noël (Leader, Inhalation Toxicology Core) co-chaired a Hot Topic session with Daniel Conklin from the University of Louisville. The title of the session, held on March 30, 2022, is GRAS Is Not Always Greener and Is Not Always Safer: The Cardiopulmonary Toxicity of Solvents and Flavorants of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS)—What Is the US FDA Missing in 2021 Deeming Rules? Dr. Noël also gave a presentation entitled Modeling Respiratory Toxicity of ENDS Exposure In Vitro and In Vivo as part of the session and an Introduction to Toxicology Lecture as part of the meeting's undergraduate diversity program.

The program covers a wide range of topics related to air pollution and environmental health and also introduces students to different career paths in the environmental health sciences. High school students involved in Southern University's Upward Bound program are recruited to participate in the week-long program. Participants do not need to have any prior experience with research or STEM classes.

- LSU SRP Open Forum Seminar on EPFRs and Human HealthThe Louisiana State University Superfund Research Program (LSU SRP) hosted three scientists who are experts in lung disease and the dangers of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRS) from the University of Queensland in Australia. These LSU SRP collaborators traveled to Baton Rouge to speak at the LSU SRP Open Forum Seminar on EPFRs and Human Health on May 25, 2023.
