- LSU Social Work Professor’s New Book Chronicles Police Brutality and the African American CommunityBATON ROUGE – Given the increasing attention to unarmed African Americans who have lost their lives at the hands of police, LSU School of Social Work Professor of Child and Family Studies Cassandra Chaney examined community sentiment regarding police in her new book titled “Police Use of Excessive Force against African Americans: Historical Antecedents and Community Perceptions.” The book delves into how the early antecedents of police brutality like plantation overseers, the lynching of African American males, early race riots, the Rodney King incident and the Los Angeles Rampart Scandal have directly impacted the current relationship between communities of color and police.

- LSU's Wilks awarded $3.73 Million Grant for Alzheimer's CareLSU School of Social Work (LSU SSW), in partnership with Ochsner Health System, Chamberlain University College of Nursing and Alzheimer's Services of the Capital Area in Baton Rouge is proud to announce a 5-year, $3.73 million initiative to improve the quality of life for Louisiana residents and families living with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, or ADRD. Since its inception in 2014, this federal grant program has approved 92 proposals. The LSU School of Social Work is one of only three social work programs nationally to receive this funding recognition.
- Advocating for ImmigrantsAssistant Professor Jennifer Scott, PhD and LSU Immigration Law Clinic's Lauren Aronson, JD, created a program to train social workers, lawyers and interpreters to how to better collaborate to help immigrants.
- Laura D'Aquin, SSW Alumna, Speaks on Her LSU ExperienceLaura D'Aquin, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, graduated from LSU in 2014. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Studies. She currently resides in the Houston, Texas area working as a Certified Child Life Specialist at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital.
- Jablonski Offers Tips to Earning LSU's Online Higher Education & Administration Master'sJennifer Jablonski, from Christiansburg, Virginia and a student in the School of Education Online Master's in Higher Education Administration Program, co-presented at the National Association of Schools of Music Conference in Washington, D.C. Jablonski is currently the Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management in the School of Music at the University of South Carolina. She presented along with Fred Peterbark, Director of Music Admission at Ithaca College. The presentation was titled "Recruitment and Retention: Establishing Pipelines, Managing the Cohort, Stemming Enrollment Decline," and it was delivered at the National Association of Schools of Music's 95th Annual Meeting in November 2018. The presentation was standing-room only, with an audience of at least 250 members. Following the presentation, Jennifer received hundreds of requests for her presentation.

- LSU School of Social Work Announces Partnership to Develop the National Suicidology Training CenterBATON ROUGE – The LSU School of Social Work in partnership with the Baton Rouge Crisis Intervention Center Inc., or BRCIC, is pleased to announce the establishment of the LSU School of Social Work Training Center to develop resources and training for suicide prevention, intervention, postvention, and other training, for on-going social work education for the establishment of a new program, the National Suicidology Training Center, or NSTC. This leading-edge collaboration will provide trainees with access to internationally known content experts in a limited-participant setting to maximize learning experiences.

- Geaux Serve - School Alumni, Faculty, and Students' Day of ServiceIn the spirit of celebrating 80+ years of social work excellence, the LSU School of Social Work faculty, staff, students, and alumni spent the day providing support to two local non-profit organizations in Baton Rouge, St. Vincent DePaul and Youth Oasis. The event, called GEAUX SERVE, consisted of over 75 volunteer from the School of Social Work's Faculty, Staff, Students, and Alumni working on various projects at both agencies.

Additionally, the book examines 14 specific populations and how to effectively treat them in order to better serve them and our communities.

- Ashley Gray Selected as 2018 Advisor of the YearAshley Gray was recently named LSU Advisor of the Year by the LSU University College. The award winner was selected by a committee of LSU students, faculty and staff and community leaders from a competitive pool of LSU academic counselors from across campus. LSU Advisor of the Year Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated qualities associated with outstanding academic advising of students.
