Terms

Tiger Card - School issued ID that also can act similar to a debit card if using Paw Points or TigerCASH.

Paw Points - Money that comes with LSU meal plans which expires at the end of the academic year (after Spring semester). Can only be spent on campus at places that sell food (can be used to buy non-edible supplies from Take-5 and Out Takes). Stored on Tiger Card.

TigerCASH - Similar to Paw Points but it is taken at some off campus businesses and does not expire at the end of the academic year. Can be purchased through the Tiger Card office, Tiger Card kiosks on campus, and the Tiger Card web portal through MyLSU.

Meal Swipes - Passes into one of the residential dining halls on campus that are bought in meal plans. They are stored on your Tiger Card and reset weekly,

UCFY - University Center for Freshman Year

UCAC - Center for Advising and Counseling

CAS - Center for Academic Success

FYE - First Year Experience

SI - Supplemental Instruction. Sessions are held outside of class (free of charge) by students who have done well in the course previously, and it is made to reinforce material gone over in historically difficult class.

TA - Teaching Assistant

GA - Graduate Assistant

Important Places

The Quad - Quadrangle shaped collection of classrooms and courtyard located immediately West of the Student Union

LSU Library - The main library located on the north end of the Quad

The 459 - Dining hall located behind Acadian and Laville Residence Halls

The Five - Dining hall located on the northwest corner of campus.

Student Union - The large building to the south of the Parade Ground. Food court, mail room, ballroom, Magnolia Room and White Oak Lounge are among things located in the Union.

Himes/Testing Center - Testing center that is located to the right when facing the front entrance of Middleton Library. Look for stairs on the side of the building. Tests taken in Himes must be scheduled in advance through the testing center webpage.

Free Speech Alley - Path in front of the union dedicated to free speech. Often populated with clubs and other groups advertising themselves and/or their message.

Cox Auditorium - Large auditorium classroom located in the Gym/Armory building

Tips From Previous Freshmen

Map out your class route
It’s a good idea to map out your classes and walk to each one of them prior to the first day of the semester

Zone parking
From 7:30am-4:30pm on weekdays (and a few lots have additional times) parking lots are resevered by tag. Tags can be bought at the Public Safety Building on South Stadium Road

Don’t forget your Tiger Card
Your Tiger Card is used for everything from your room key to your identifier to take tests. Try to make a habit of keeping this on you at all times

Check Moodle daily
Moodle is the online portal that most professors use to communicate with their students

Use constructive time management
Write out a schedule for your week. Block out times of the day for classes, extracurriculars, meals, and studying
