- Industrial Engineering – T-77 overall (last year’s ranking was T-79). Tied with West Virginia University and Wright State University.
- Mechanical Engineering – T-96 overall (last year’s ranking was T-111). Tied with Kansas State University, San Diego State University, Texas Tech University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Rochester, University of Vermont, Villanova University, University of Alabama-Huntsville, and University of Alabama.
- Petroleum Engineering – T-11 overall (last year’s ranking was T-12). Tied with the University of Wyoming.
The rankings were based on surveys by U.S. News with 219 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees. Statistical data was collected in fall 2023 and early 2024. Maintaining last year’s revamped focus, the ranking factor weights for this edition again featured an emphasis on research and a reduced emphasis on reputation, faculty resources, and selectivity. U.S. News took this approach based on the knowledge that research productivity is a core attribute of a department enrolling doctorate students. Also, there is increased confidence in research grants data that is validated against what schools reported to the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Criteria was as follows:
- Research activity – 50%
- Quality assessment – 25%
- Faculty research – 20%
- Student selectivity – 5%
