- LSU Petroleum, Mechanical Engineering Professors Developing Leakage Sensor for CCS Sites, CO2 PipelinesNovember 27, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a way of reducing carbon emissions by capturing the carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by power generation or industrial activity; compressing and transporting it via pipelines, trucks, or ships; and then storing it deep underground in geological formations, such as saline aquifers or depleted oil and gas reservoirs. While CCS has proven to be mostly safe, there is always a chance of leakage.
- LSU Engineering Researchers Seek Advancements in Underwater ConstructionNovember 15, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - In 2022, the average global sea level reached a record high at 101.2 millimeters--four inches above 1993 levels. That same year, the National Weather Service recorded an all-time high of 13 "significant weather events." Both of these statistics signal a greater challenge when it comes to the resiliency of coastal communities and their infrastructure, but it's one a pair of LSU Engineering researchers are taking on through a nearly $500,000 National Science Foundation Future Manufacturing Award.
- LSU Construction Management Professor, Team Research Solar Energy in LANovember 9, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - Louisiana has more sunny days than the national average, so why not put all of that summer heat to good use? Realizing the potential to harness the Sun's energy, LSU Bert S. Turner Department of Construction Management Assistant Professor Arup Bhattacharya is researching solar power farming in the state thanks to a $94,000 grant from the Institute for Energy Innovations.
- LSU Researchers Examining Power Grid Inequity in Disadvantaged NOLA CommunitiesOctober 31, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - Oftentimes, when a state or region's power grid is discussed, the words innovation, resilience, reliability, etc., are mentioned. But there's another equally important term that is the focus of a research project by LSU Electrical Engineering and LSU Sociology faculty--equity.
- LSU Electrical Engineering Researcher Looks to Bolster EV Charging InfrastructureOctober 23, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - One critique about electric vehicles (EV) is the lengthy charging times. Fast-charging stations can overcome this issue. However, installing them imposes an additional load on the electric power grid. For instance, when EV owners choose to charge their vehicle may coincide with peak load times for the grid. This can result in a strain on the grid and eventually, power outages and stability issues.
- Mechanical Engineering Researchers Developing New Football Helmet PrototypeOctober 17, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - In the winter of 2019, the National Football League hosted its Helmet Challenge Symposium in Youngstown, Ohio, bringing together 300 engineers, manufacturing experts, and innovators from across the country. The goal of that event was to foster collaboration among an array of experts in various fields, with the desired outcome being a safer football helmet.
- Gao Receives LAMDA Research AwardOctober 16, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - Tong Gao, a postdoctoral associate in the LSU Cain Department of Chemical Engineering, recently received a Louisiana Materials Design Alliance, or LAMDA, Seed Track 1C Postdoctoral Research Award.
- LSU Researchers Receive $1.1M to Create Cyberinfrastructure to Improve Disaster ResilienceOctober 6, 2023BATON ROUGE - In the quest to build more disaster resilient communities, good data is a powerful tool. But while information on everything from climate to cell phone usage is available today, finding the right data in a usable format presents an obstacle for many researchers.
- LSU Chemical Engineering Researchers' New Recycling Process Published in Angewandte ChemieOctober 4, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - In a recently published paper in Angewandte Chemie, LSU Chemical Engineering Associate Professor Kunlun Ding and his research group detail a new concept for recycling plastic waste.
- LSU Industrial Engineering Grad Student Interns With TeslaOctober 4, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU Industrial Engineering graduate student Min Pun is braving the Texas heat while he interns at Tesla's Gigafactory Texas in Austin this fall. Pun, who is originally from Nepal, has worked for Tesla before and jumped at the chance to have an internship there again.
- Computer Science's Baumgartner Part of National Cloud Computing ProjectSeptember 29, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU is one of several institutions that will be partnering soon with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Microsoft Corp., and Micron Technology to make computational chemistry broadly available to applied researchers and industrial users.
- LSU, Tulane Researchers Synthesize Ultrasmall Nanoshells for Improved Biomedical ImagingSeptember 21, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - Researchers from LSU's Cain Department of Chemical Engineering and Tulane University's Biomedical Engineering Department synthesized sub-100 nm gold nanoshells, i.e., particles with silica cores covered by a thin gold shell, and used them to improve the penetration depth of photoacoustic imaging. Gold nanoshells are promising candidates for biomedical imaging and cancer therapy, but synthetic challenges have limited their diameters to greater than 100 nm for more than 20 years. LSU chemical engineers synthesized 62 nm nanoshells and collaborated with Tulane biomedical engineers to demonstrate a 50% improvement in the photoacoustic imaging depth compared to current state-of-the-art nanoshells.
- LSU, SIU Researchers Examine Better Spectrum Sharing ModelingSeptember 20, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - It may be taken for granted on a daily basis, but a worldwide increase in spectrum usage has made spectrum sharing an important economic topic. At the heart of that topic is ensuring that spectrum management mechanisms are efficient, fair, and maintain user privacy.
- LSU Petroleum Engineering Professor, Research Team Seek to Plug Orphan Wells Leaking MethaneSeptember 19, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - There are currently more than 4,500 orphan oil wells in Louisiana, meaning oil companies have abandoned them for one reason or another, namely for not making money. Nearly 450 of these wells were tagged "orphan" in 1994, which means they have been dormant and possibly leaking methane gas for nearly 30 years.
- LSU Petroleum Engineering Professor Receives DOE Grant for CO2 StorageSeptember 14, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - LSU Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering Assistant Professor Olufemi Olorode recently received a $525,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Basic Energy Sciences program to research carbon dioxide storage in gas hydrates using coarse-grained molecular dynamics (MD).
- LSU Computer Science Professor Leading Project to Increase Security in Federated LearningSeptember 13, 2023BATON ROUGE, LA - Federated learning is a technique that has gained attention for its potential to improve privacy, security, and efficiency in various sectors. At times, in order to improve the quality and robustness of this technique, it is subject to periods of "critical learning." However, it is during these periods that outside agents have an opportunity to launch precise and damaging attacks.
